Pickering Dragon Boat Challenge
June 5, 2004
By Luc D. and Wilson
Verdun DBC-Adrenaline was one of 101 teams racing at the 8th Annual Pickering Dragon Boat Challenge this week-end. They completed their preliminary heat in 2 minutes and 6.97 seconds, placing the team 9th overall and earning a spot in Division A.
Adrenaline then needed a top-three finish in their semi-final to move to the A Division championship final.
With a "finish of their lives", the paddlers rose to the occasion and edged out Imaxx Big Fish by 0.30 seconds with a time of 2:05.80 to earn a spot in the A final.
As the shadows were getting long at Bruce Hanscombe Memorial Park, the crew started loading the boat for the A Final. Verdun saved the best for last and turned in a masterful performance with a race time of
2:07.00.
A Final Results
1. Wong's Dragon Slayers (2:03.36)
2. Interline X-Paddling Collective (2:05.21)
3. SCC Team Chiropractic (2:05.77)
4. Scotia Beach (2:06.11)
5. Hammerheads Dragon Boat Crew (2:06.14)
6. Verdun DBC-Adrenaline (2:07.00)
Heavy tail crosswinds delayed the start of the races by about 30 minutes and the last race did not wrap up until 8:00 p.m.; but otherwise it was a splendid day for racing on Frenchman's Bay.
Congratulations to Adrenaline for a fine performance at Pickering, Ont. and a top-six finish against a strong field.
Congratulations as well to the Montreal Women for winning the Women's Cup.
Thanks for the great showing at Pickering! Our team has lots of heart... With effort and determination, we proved over there that we do have our place along side the top teams! And the season has just started!
Next step: Lachine. Let's improve on our starts, so see you all this week at practice. And BRAVO for the A Final we fought hard for!!!
A big thanks to Matt and Audrey for handling and controlling the team during the races. A huge thank you to Helen for finding the accommodations and relaying team info during the competition.
Thanks,
Luc D. and Wilson Wong Co-Managers
