Ottawa Dragon Boat Race Festival

June 26-27, 2004

Ottawa tent

Saturday morning greeted us with beautiful blue skies and no sign of the rain clouds that were forecasted. We had our first race at 8:30 in the morning with perfect conditions and raced a time of 2:25. After the first round, we found ourselves in 11th place.

After staying dry under the tent covered with tarps during the rain delay, we went for our second race of the day 45 minutes after it was scheduled. We were able to cut 3 seconds off our first race time and won the Government Cup. Nevertheless, we were still waiting to see how the other teams would perform. We wanted to know whether our time was good enough to earn us a top 10 spot for the 100-metre sprint.

By the time we left Mooney’s Bay and went for dinner, we were still in 10th place, but we knew there were other teams still to race. Matt stayed at the site to help steer some other Montreal teams and at the end of the day, he informed us that we had retained our 10th place seeding!

Sunday race conditions changed dramatically. We found ourselves paddling into the wind. The first race on Sunday went very well; Matt encouraged us to race intelligently and with control. We won this race with a time of 2:31:55, placing us in 6th place. We had made the A Final!

A short while later, we raced the 100m Sprint Final! This race did not count towards the rankings and was purely for fun! The wind was still strong and waves were high. We had a beautiful start and never stopped going all out until the finish line. We finished 5th in the sprint and we were thrilled with the result.

It was a great end to our weekend in Ottawa with fantastic results! Thanks to everyone who came out to paddle, Helen for organizing our lodging, Matt for motivating the team and keeping us on track and Audrey, Jeanne, Geneviève, Anita and Wilson for calling the races (or just trying to hang on to the drum!).
