Join the Verdun Dragon Boat Club

Note: We are looking for a few paddlers -- particularly male -- to round out our team rosters for the current season.

We are looking for fit, dependable people to join our club--paddling experience is not necessary. If you are willing to work hard and are committed to giving 100%, we could be the team for you.

From May to October we practice two or three times a week on the Lachine Canal (once a week for the Impact team). We compete at local races and at a few competitions in other cities. The rest of the year finds us working out in the gym and improving our paddling technique at the Olympic Basin's indoor facilities on Ile Notre Dame.

Requirements

Our members are of all backgrounds and ages, except for the junior team who are between 14 and 17 years old. Each of our teams are composed of 12 males and 8 females. For the adult teams we require that you:

  • have at least an average level of fitness
  • have good team spirit
  • be willing to follow coaching instruction and training programs
  • be able to make all practices each week during the outdoor season, and at least one practice a week during the indoor season
  • be able to travel (up to four times a year) to competitions outside Montreal, as far as Toronto and Welland.

Note: Competitive paddling is a cardio intensive activity. Potential members are recommended to have previous experience at a regular cardioactive activity and/or to undergo a medical check-up before participating in our program.

Cost of Participation

We are partially subsidized by our sponsors but there are a few costs that you will have to cover:

  • indoor practices during the winter (about $5 per week)
  • practices on the Lachine Canal during the outdoor season (roughly $5 per practice)
  • team uniform (approximately $50)
  • travel expenses for competitions in other cities (up to about $100 for each competition)

Paddles and lifejackets are provided, but you may eventually wish to buy your own.

Benefits

Membership in Verdun Dragonboat Club has its benefits:

  • first-rate paddling instruction
  • motivation to increase your fitness level
  • being part of a top-level paddling club
  • social events (cabane à sucre, barbeque, end-of-season party)
  • getting to know 60 great people.

How to Join

If you wish to experience a paddling session before you commit, join us for a trial practice before making up your mind. Contact the training coordinator to arrange a time.

For more information about joining our club contact the recruiting coordinator.
